MC /05/00 Meeting with Marcel Schiess SUI
MS attended part of the meeting
He discussed the responsibility of the MC.
Also discussed were the costs of printing the specifications.
MC raised a number of problems regarding the contracts for staging IOF Events.
a) to draw attention to the need to follow the Mapping Specifications
b) that part of the contract should include the fact that the area proposed for the event is suitable.
c) the help given to IOF Advisers when they were appointed to enable them to evaluate the maps for IOF Events.

MC/05/01 Agenda and Minutes
The agenda was agreed and EP was appointed to take the minutes. LZ would prepare a short summary for IOF Council.

The minutes of meeting 2-2004 in Västeras, Sweden were approved.

Items for AOB A number of items were noted.

MC/05/02 Map generalisation
EP reported that the work was on going. He displayed some samples giving the sizes of symbols on the ground and the physical distances between symbols.

MC/05/03 Print Tech Project
JL had prepared a draft paper on the present status of the project.
MC discussed various methods of printing in particular overprinting of courses.

1 It was agreed that with high quality printers and suitable care it was acceptable to overprint courses on maps using ink jet or laser printers.
2 It was agreed that Ski O, MTBO and Trail O maps may be printed using high quality laser printers.

JL would publish the paper on the MC web page by 1st March 2005. It was agreed that the paper would be revised from time to time as and when the MC obtained more information. MC hoped that member Federations would forward information as it became available.

EP circulated a PDF document which might help to quantify the resolution of printers. A number of suggestions were made and EP would ask the author to incorporate them into a new document.

MC/05/04 Map Specification for Sprint-O (ISSOM)
1) Questionnaire for WOC 2004 Sprint O in Sweden
MC discussed the results of the questionnaire
a) It was agreed to publish the results on the MC web page.
b) The MC noted the comments from competitors about the representation of paths. These would be taken into account when the ISSOM was revised later in the meeting.

2) Federation Comments on ISSOM.
MC considered in detail papers submitted by the Czech, Italian, Swedish and Norwegian Federations.

It was agreed that MC should emphasise that the ISSOM was a different set of symbols.

a) It was agreed that TG would prepare a reply to the Czech Federations paper. LZ would write thanking them for the submission.
b) It was agreed that SG would convey the MC discussions to the Italian Federation and thanking them on behalf of the MC
c) It was agreed that LZ would write to the Swedish Federation conveying the MC discussions and thanking them for their work.
d) It was agreed that HT would convey MC discussion to the Norwegian Federation and thank them for work.
e) LZ would seek the approval of the Federations to publish the papers on the MC web site.

3) MC considered a request from the Japanese Federation for a variation in the specifications for WOC2005

It was agreed that the principal that thick black lines representing barriers and obstacles should be maintained.

It was noted that ISSOM already allowed the cartographer to choose a brown shade up to 30% plus 10% (that is, up to 40%) in non urban areas.

It was agreed that the specification be amended to allow the brown shade to be increased by 20% (that is, up to 50%) in non urban areas. It was also agreed that the edge of paved areas shall be 0.14mm in non urban areas.

LZ would write to the Japanese Federation conveying these decisions.

4) MC had a detailed discussion on the symbols and specifications of ISSOM.
TG and LZ would prepare a revised version of the Specification.


MC/05/05 Map Specification for Mountain Bike Orienteering.
It was agreed that MC would check the MTBO rules.
JL would circulate a set of MTBO OCAD symbols
LZ would consult MTBO Commission as to the support they needed from MC
LZ would write to Michael Wood NZ thanking him for his letter.

MC/05/06 11TH ICOM 2005
LZ had received a proposal from the Japanese Federation to hold the ICOM on the 6th August 2005 in Toyota City, Japan
A number of topics and presenters were proposed. LZ, TG and SG indicated that they would be attending.


MC/05/07 Correspondence
1) World Cup 2006 France
TG had visited the area. He had produced a 1:15000 of the proposed area which MC examined in detail. It was agreed that the map needed some generalisation before it would be suitable for a WC
If the French Federation agreed, Thomas Brogli SUI had offered to help give advice on generalisation. IOF would pay his expenses. It was agreed that the MC would expect a 1:15000 map for the event.

2) World Cup 2004 Germany
MC was concerned that the maps used for the WC in Germany in October 2004 were not produced to specifications.
LZ would request official copies of the maps.
LZ would request Foot O Commission to consider the role of the IOF Adviser in the production of the maps.
SG would produce some examples of poor cartography used for WC and WRE maps. It was hoped that this process might help IOF Event Advisers to assess maps for IOF Events.

3) Specification for fences in ISSOM
LZ had had letters from Ronny Timmers BEL concerning the specification of the Impassable fence in ISSOM. LZ had replied.

4) Victor Kirianov UKR
Membership of MC has been withdrawn by his Federation

MC/05/08 IOF MC Correspondents
EP reported that the letter to all Federations inviting them to appoint a correspondent had been sent recently by the IOF office.


MC/05/09 Next meeting
It was agreed that MC would meet in August 2005 in Japan and at the joint meeting in Finland during January 2006.


MC/05/10 Any Other Business

1) TG had received details of a mapping clinic to be held in Chile 20th -25th November 2005. MC would support the effort if funds were available from IOF.

2) TG reported on possible developments for OCAD. Details could be found on the OCAD web site.
