New Structure for the Project „Multimedial History of Hungary and Finland on CD-ROM”

02 July 2001

General remarks

The biggest change in the new structure is as follows: the epoch-overview and the single epochs get completely new tables of content. The proposals of the finish colleagues were regarded and the tables of content were changed into timelines. Those pages are still in a provisional version at the moment. But on this basis the design should be worked out by Fraunhofer Institute. It has to be pointed out here we are only dealing with structure and no form!

The timeline to overview epochs (first timeline)

It is essential that the overview is visible only on one screen. It should not be scrollable. Giving each epoch its own colour is totally new here. Even the text pages and illustration pages get the same, leading colour.

Underneath the timeline in every epoch are different buttons for introduction (the comparison between Hungarian and Finish history), chronology, maps of Europe, Finland and Hungary in those epochs.

The titles of all the epochs are sensitive. In this way the user can easily reach the timelines of the epochs which means the second timeline.

The timeline to every single epoch (second timeline)

By changing from the first timeline to the second timeline the user should have the impression the first one was zoomed. The length of a timeline of an epoch is matched to the screen.

Here the subchapters appear in bars with the referring title. Further items are only visible by clicking on it with the mouse. A pop-up-menu shows the structure of each subchapter. These items are also sensitive which lead the user to every referring part of the subchapter whereas the text page is shown first.

The vertical lines connecting the different bars in the Hungarian and Finish part show those positions where a comparison exists between Hungarian and Finish history. These connections are sensitive as well. The Hungarian part of the line gives the position in the Hungarian history and the same with the Finish part of the line giving the position in the Finish history.

The epochs can be changed with the help of the arrows at the beginning and at the end of the timeline.

The structure scheme contains two epochs only to demonstrate the change of colours at appearance of the second timeline.

The timeline on the text and illustration pages (third timeline)

The smallest timeline is a repetition in content of the second timeline but without pop-up-menu. It is a navigation help to show the user his position and it is possible to go to other subchapters as well as to other epochs.

Text and illustration pages

These pages appear in the colour belonging to the epoch. In the upper part of the navigations system the arrows, the button to change between text and illustrations page and the emblem are deleted. The navigation line which is moved to the top of the page, contains two animated gifs to change between text and illustrations page. The button for the basic map is shown here as well.

The title can miss here because it appears already in the left navigation part. Each title is highlighted in a certain colour. For the user it would be irritating to have the same title twice anyways.

The third timeline replaces the previous navigation line at the end of the page. A special button at the side of this timeline (e. g. the picture of a magnifying glass) allows to go to the timeline of the epoch (to the second timeline). The previous button “epoch” is replaced by the button “epoch timeline”. The buttons “Introduction” and “Chronology” should be placed in the left navigation part.

Text and illustration pages have navigation buttons (arrows) to move forwards and backwards, down in the right corner. Between the both arrows are as many little squares as corresponding pages exists. For example two pages belong to the part 8.1.1 therefore there have to be two little squares. The colour of the squares shows the user his position.

Remarks concerning other items

The colour for the common pages as well for Hungary as for Finland remains yellow. The main colour of the bar of the timeline is grey also in the chronology pages. Main colour for the navigation is a dark blue.

Dates

Proposals for little changes or additions are to be given until 9. July 2001 to Rostock. Bigger changes are not be regarded because we are pressed for time. I will discuss the proposals with Mr. Fischer. The final structure has to be handed to the Fraunhofer Institut on 12. July 2001 including the verbal explanations.
