1. Report on South Africa, August, 2003

The Commission met during the International Cartographic Conference in August, 2003, in Durban (South Africa). After his report the resigned chairman (Vladimir Tikunov) asked Corné van Elzakker (ITC, The Netherlands) to inform the participants about the cartographic education in ITC.
We had three applicants for the chairmanship of the commission and at the end of the meeting they introduced themselves to the participants.

At the General Assembly, László Zentai (Hungary) was elected as Chair of the Commission succeeding Vladimir Tikunov who was elected the Vice President of the ICA.
László's email is:
zetor@ludens.elte.hu

David Fraser (Australia) - david.fraser@rmit.edu.au and Wolfgang Meissner (Germany) - wo.meissner@t-online.de are vice Chairs.

David Fairbairn is the Commission's liaison with the ICA executive.

The ICC 2007 will be organized in Moscow (Russia).

2. Terms of Reference 2003-2007

The Terms of Reference was accepted by the General Assembly:

  • To work for the general aims conceived in the ICA Statutes.
  • To produce an ICA-sponsored Internet cartography teaching programme (modules), with regional workshops for training the teachers.
  • To produce an ICA-sponsored Internet programme for continuing education, with regional workshops for teacher training.
  • To support cartography and cartographic education in developing nations by holding seminars in developing nations.
  • To promote integration by establishing linkage with the committees on education of sister surveying and mapping disciplines, by producing a list of institutions providing cartography course programmes, and interact as much as possible with other ICA commissions and working groups (organize joint meetings).
  • To produce appropriate publications for dissemination of results of the above efforts and publish it in proceedings or on the CET website according to the IOF publication policy.

3. ICA Executive Commission Meeting with Commission Chairs

In 24-25 January 2004 in Prague (Czech Republic) the Executive Commission of ICA had a meeting with the commission chairs. The main topic of the meeting was the implementation of the Strategic plan into the commission activities. The Vice Presidents gave us some presentations and we had joint activities during the meeting and discussed the main items: science, practice, education. The CET was represented by László and Wolfgang.
This meeting (and the following Seminar in Vienna) gave a good chance for us to arrange the forthcoming events, agree on joint meetings and seminars.

4. Forthcoming events

The Annual meeting of the CET will be organized in Vilnius (Lithuania). There will be a joint seminar (Education - New Tasks) with the Commission on Theoretical Cartography and the Lithuanian cartographers and geographers. The local organizer is Giedre Beconyte. Additional information will be available on the website soon.

The ICA International Cartographic Conference 2005 will be held in A Coruña, Spain. Ramon Lorenzo (the CCC executive liaison) is chairman of the Spanish Organizing Committee. The dates selected are July 9-16, 2005. The conference venue's website is: www.icc2005.org

There will be a joint meeting of three ICA Commissions (Cartography and Children, Education and Training, National and Regional Atlases) just before the main conference.

5. Internet Cartography Teaching courses

Some modules are available on the website from the previous period.
These preliminary modules probably will be updated and redesigned.
An additional module is under construction (Toponymy).
We are working on the organization of this project.

6. Commission website

The Commission website is: lazarus.elte.hu/cet.
This website is maintained by the chairman personally, so we don’t have to wait for an editor or administrator to keep the website up-to-date. The content:

  • Mailing list
  • Undergraduate Cartography courses
  • Internet Cartography Teaching courses
  • History of the commission
  • Seminars and workshops

  • Newsletters
  • Proceedings of the CET seminars
  • Basic Cartography (this series - 1988-1996 - provides a complete course in cartography)
  • Reports (the detailed reports of the previous two CET periods)

7. Mailing list

I set up a mailing list to make the information distribution much easier.
You can send a message to cet@lazarus.elte.hu and your message will be sent to each "subscriber". All members are subscribers, but you can unsubscribe automatically if you want.
It is allowed to send attachment to the list, but the size limit is 150 kB (practically your attachment cannot be larger then circa 100 kB).
The messages are automatically archieved (depending on the actual network speed the sent message may appear in the archive in some seconds). The archieve is available here: lazarus.elte.hu/lists/
